TRIBUTE TO THE MASTER

Mizell was born in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 5 he started playing trumpets and played bass, guitar, and drums in various bands prior to discovering turntables. He moved to Hollis Queens in 1975 with his family where he soon discovered the turntables and started DJing at the age of 13. He caught on quickly because of his musical experience and only after a year of DJing he felt that he was good enough to play in front of people. He first started playing at parks and later played at bars. Once he got a pair of Technics 1200s he improved rapidly since he was able to practice at night with headphones on when he was supposed to be sleeping.

HARRIET TUBMAN

Harriet Tubman was born a slave in 1820 or 1821 in Bucktown, Maryland, and was one of elevenchildren born to Harriet Green and Benjamin Ross. In the summer of 1849 she escaped the bonds of slavery, traveling by night through Maryland and Delaware to Philadelphia. From there she continued to New York and finally up into Canada. "I had reasoned this out in my mind," she said. There was one of two things I had a right to -- liberty or death. If I could not have one, I could have the other, for no man should take me alive. I shall fight for my liberty and when the time comes for me to go, the Lord will let them kill me."

Her freedom meant little to her when every wind from the South was charged with the plaintive cries of her oppressed brethren for deliverance. Her freedom was a mockery to her as long as she could hear the crack of the overseers whip, the clank of slave chains.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB MARLEY!!

Bob Marley was a hero figure, in the classic mythological sense. His departure from this planet came at a point when his vision of One World, One Love -- inspired by his belief in Rastafari -- was beginning to be heard and felt. The last Bob Marley and the Wailers tour in 1980 attracted the largest audiences at that time for any musical act in Europe.

RALPH BUNCH

Seeking justice and harmony among races and nations was Ralph Bunche’s passion in life. The son of a barber, he was born 100 years ago last August in Detroit. “My childhood days were poor days,” Bunche later wrote, but he remembered fondly “hitching my sled in winter onto the tailgates of horse drawn beer trucks; swimming on Belle Isle in the summer . . . [and] rooting for the Tigers …” When he was 10 years old, the family moved to New Mexico. When his parents died two years later, he moved with his grandmother to Los Angeles, where he graduated first in his class both in high school and in college at UCLA.
